Top 5 Things to Do Near Blowing Rock, NC

Posted on June 30, 2023July 3, 2023 by admin

Do you love charming small towns? Are the mountains calling you? Are you looking for some great hikes? Do you want to marvel at some of the best fall foliage in the country? If so, Blowing Rock, North Carolina is where you need to go!

I was lucky enough to visit the western region of North Carolina 3 times in the last year and I’ve fallen in love with the area even more each time. I love being surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains while also feeling that homey southern charm. Of all of the places I’ve visited in North Carolina so far, Blowing Rock is my absolute favorite!

If you’re looking to plan a trip to Blowing Rock, keep reading to find out what my top 5 favorite things to do in the area are!

5. Go see The Blowing Rock

Fun fact: The Blowing Rock is North Carolina’s oldest travel attraction!

Here you will find a cliff that overhangs the Johns River Gorge with gorgeous views of Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell, Hawksbill Mountain and Table Rock in the distance. The trails are easy and accessible and definitely family friendly! It only takes about 15-30 minutes to walk the whole trail but you could easily spend an hour here. Be sure to visit their website for info regarding admission, hours, maps, history, etc.

4. Take a walk around Bass Lake

Right outside the town of Blowing Rock you will find the beautiful Bass Lake. Here you can walk the 0.9 mile paved loop around the lake and take in views of Cone Manor which sits above the lake in the distance. This is a very easy hike and is especially pretty during sunset! You can also fish here (hence the name Bass Lake).

3. Walk around town enjoying the shops/restaurants

Blowing Rock is the CUTEST little town! Main Street is lined with dozens of local shops, restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries just waiting to be explored. You could easily spend a few hours perusing in the boutiques and specialty shops. Whether you’re looking for a new outfit, some artwork to bring home, outdoor gear for your next hike or some handmade pottery, there’s something for everyone!

2. Visit Grandfather Mountain

There are 2 ways to visit Grandfather Mountain – Grandfather Mountain State Park or the privately owned Grandfather Mountain attraction (Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, Inc.)

At the private attraction you can walk across the amazing mile high bridge for some incredible views or visit the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery which is a great interactive wildlife museum. At the Wilson Center you can check out the wildlife habitats of black bears, elk, cougars, otters and eagles!

Both the state park and private park offer many hiking trails to explore (many end up overlapping). My favorite was the hike up to Macrae Peak (from the private park). On the way to Macrae Peak you will have to climb ladders, use ropes and scale cliffs. It’s definitely not a hike for those afraid of heights, but it is a challenge worth accepting! The rewarding views from the top make the climb so worth it!

1. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469 mile highway that passes right through Blowing Rock. It starts at Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park at mile 0 and ends in Cherokee, NC at mile 469. You can hop on the Parkway and head Southwest towards Asheville or you can head Northeast towards Virginia to end up at Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. There is so much to see and do along the Parkway!

Tip: Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall to see all of the fall foliage! It’s an incredible fall drive but it’s pretty no matter the season!

Let me know what your favorite things to do in Blowing Rock are! And stay tuned for more Blue Ridge Parkway blog posts in the future.

A year ago tonight we arrived at Joshua Tree Natio A year ago tonight we arrived at Joshua Tree National Park right after sunset. We caught a glimpse of the park before the last light as we made our way to our campsite. We wouldn’t know how stunning the desert landscape truly was until the following day but boy was it a beautiful night! We spent hours stargazing, saw several shooting stars, camped under the vast desert sky and were welcomed by a beautiful sunrise over the desert mountains the next morning. This was truly a night I’ll never forget! ✨🖤

2024 was definitely a life changing one in many wa 2024 was definitely a life changing one in many ways. There were so many ups and downs. There were plenty of hard times, but also many good ones. It was filled with lots of love and travel but also plenty of anxiety and heartache. It led me to learn so much about myself. I finally decided to take control of my mental health and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I enrolled in school again to my bachelor’s degree (something I never thought I would never be able to do because of my mental health). I’ve come a long way this year but plan on working on myself even more in this year to come. It’s time to take control of my physical health, focus on self care and strengthen my friendships and relationships.

Here’s to hoping that 2025 treats everyone I know and love with kindness. And that we treat ourselves with that same kindness too. 🫶🏼 HAPPY NEW YEAR Y’ALL! ✨

**side note: we started 2024 on the beaches of Florida last year and are ending it the same way! 🌊☀️
I can’t believe I’m just getting around to sha I can’t believe I’m just getting around to sharing a few clips from our amazing trip to Northern Arkansas in October. Life has been crazy lately!

If you’ve been here a while, you know we take an anniversary trip every October. We usually visit a new National Park (or two or three). This year we weren’t able to plan a big trip so we opted to stay close and took a roadtrip to Northern Arkansas instead. It was only about a 9 hour drive from Southeast Louisiana. We’ve visited the Hot Springs and Little Rock area many times but this was our first time exploring Northern Arkansas and it blew our minds!

We spent a few nights camping in the rooftop tent, spent a few nights in Eureka Springs at some of America’s most haunted hotels, did some hiking, explored multiple caves, enjoyed some perfect fall weather and completely fell in love with the area. I’m already excited to go back to explore more. 🍂

I’ll definitely have to share some more about our trip because Northern Arkansas truly is a hidden gem! 🖤

This past semester I got to take a Creative Photography class and it made my creative soul so happy! So here are some of my favorite shots I took this semester. I can’t wait to build out my portfolio even more 📷

I may have struggled to make a 30 second video but I sure do have more than 30 seconds of bloopers. So enjoy this video of me at 7:30 in the morning sitting in the middle of my living room trying to simply introduce myself 😩🙈🙃 let’s hope video making isn’t in my future 😬

It never fails that I always choose a hike that ha It never fails that I always choose a hike that has epic views but the trail is hella sketchy! I can’t count the times I’ve cried while hiking thinking I won’t be able to finish - but I always do! I’ve been stuck so many times just thinking “this is how I die” or “I wonder how much it’ll cost for someone to rescue me”.

Keep reading to see which trails are shown in this reel and my menty b story for each…

Lake Agnes Teahouse - Lake Louise, Alberta - the trail was completely iced over and we didn’t bring traction devices 🙃 we were slipping and sliding the whole way up the mountain. But the time I made it to the teahouse I was in tears and wondering how I was going to get down. Turns out, sliding down was the best part!

Mount Storm King - Olympic NP, Washington - this is one of the steepest hikes I’ve ever done! Past a certain point the trail is no longer maintained by the NPS and random hikers installed ropes to help you up to the summit. Of course I got stuck and was shaking with fear. This was definitely one of the sketchiest hikes I’ve ever done but the views were so worth it! 😍

Macrae Peak - Grandfather Mountain, NC - this trail consists of 9 ladders you have to climb and plenty of cliffs to scale to get to the top. I got stuck on one of the ladders and was crying and shaking and had to really push myself to keep going. It’s definitely a nightmare of a hike for anyone afraid of heights but one of the best hiking memories was making it to the top! ⛰️

What’s the sketchiest hike you’ve ever done? I need to add some new ones to my bucket list 😬
I think I have a thing for gorgeous lakes 🤩💙 I think I have a thing for gorgeous lakes 🤩💙

This photo was taken at Lake Wenatchee State Park in Leavenworth, WA this past October. We were heading back to Seattle after an amazing week exploring Mount Rainier and North Cascades National Parks and we decided to make one last stop to check out the lake. I am SO glad we decided to stop because it ended up being one of my favorite spots in all of Washington.

Because we visited in the off season it wasn’t crowded at all and it was so quiet and peaceful! The water was chilly but felt so good on my blistered feet from a week of strenuous hiking. We spent a few hours here just taking in the views and enjoying the cold water. I am definitely going to make sure I make it back here and camp out next time!

Be sure to add Lake Wenatchee to your Washington bucket list!

One of the coolest parts of my job, as a buyer for One of the coolest parts of my job, as a buyer for an outdoor retailer, is attending seasonal trade shows. Not only is it so fun to see all of the next seasons gear, I get to travel to some pretty cool places too! This year the spring trade show we attend was in Reno, NV. I got to cross off a new state (state #27!) and we got to add on a few extra days beforehand to explore the beautiful Lake Tahoe!

Here are a few notes about our trip:

📍We stayed in Incline Village, NV which was only a 45 minute drive from the Reno airport!

🚲 We rented e-bikes and enjoyed a beautiful ride along Lake Tahoe on the East Shore Trail which runs along the lake from Incline Village to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

🛶 We didn’t get to rent kayaks, but there are so many places you can rent kayaks, canoes or paddle boards to get out on the lake and explore… next time!

☀️ Early June seemed to be the perfect time to visit! The weather was beautiful, the water was cold but refreshing and we got plenty of sunshine while we were there.

🛣️ Though Lake Tahoe is huge and spans across the state line from Nevada to California, it’s an easy drive to make the entire loop around the lake. It only takes about 3-4 hours and there are plenty of places to stop and sight see along the way!

I’m already excited about next years spring show to head back to Reno! I’m looking forward to exploring more of the area!
